Google developing its own SoCs for Pixels and Chromebooks

The list of mobile phone vendors who prepare their own processors is likely to grow longer. Rumor has it that Google is currently developing a special chipset for the next Pixel phone.

This rumor has actually been circulating from last week but came from unclear sources. This time the information from Axios seemed to confirm the rumor.

Google is rumored to have made significant progress towards the development of the chipset. They have also received a prototype of the processor that was given the Whitechapel code.

Axios reports this processor will be used the fastest next year for the next Pixel phone. This means that the possibility of this processor will power the Pixel 6 which rolled out in 2021.

Not only for mobile phones, this processor is also targeted to be the brain of Google's Chromebook laptop.

The processor was created by Google with Samsung and uses 5-nanometer fabrication. There are no other complete specifications but this processor will use an 8-core ARM platform.

As is known, Samsung developed the Exynos chipset for use on its own cell phone. They also helped Apple to produce A-series chipsets used by the iPhone.

In addition to processing and computing tasks in general, Whitechapel was also developed to support artificial intelligence and other functions related to machine learning. This processor will also enhance Google Assistant functionality.

Since the first generation Pixel, Google has always used a processor from Qualcomm. But they began to use special chips to support several functions such as Pixel Visual Core which was used in Pixel 4 to support photo processing.

If this rumor becomes a reality, Google will follow in the footsteps of several other mobile giants who develop their own chipsets. Like Apple with A-series processors, Samsung is developing Exynos and Huawei processors with Kirin processors.
