Apple Reveals User Movement Data during Lockdown

In addition to collaborating with Google, Apple also shared data on user movements during the Lockdown implementation amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reportedly, this mobility data was intentionally revealed because it was expected to be able to find out how effective the application of Lockdown was. Apple wants to help local authorities to find out the movement of citizens through the use of its own directions application, namely Apple Maps.

This data is collected by calculating route requests on Maps. Then, compared to previous use to see the percentage change in the volume of people who drive, walk or use public transportation.

So far, the data covers major cities and 63 countries in the world. Specifically in Indonesia, shows a decrease in people driving up to 58% and a decrease in people walking up to 67% as of April 13 last.

Even so, Apple insisted it still maintains the privacy of its user data, because it does not link Maps with their Apple ID.

"Maps does not associate mobility data with the user's Apple ID, and Apple does not store a history of where the user is located." Apple wrote on its official website on Wednesday
