332.4 Million Domain Names Listed on the Internet at the End of 2017




As of December 31, 2017, 332.4 million domain names have been registered on the internet. These domains are registered in top level domain names or top-level domains (TLDs).

According to the global company in the domain name industry, VeriSign, in the fourth quarter of 2017, there is an increase of 1.7 million Top-Level Domain (TLD) domain names on the internet.

The 1.7 million increase of globally registered domain names indicates there is a growth of 0.5 percent compared to the third quarter of 2017.

Compared to the third quarter of 2017, there is an increase in domain names by 0.5 percent. Meanwhile, the number of domain name registration grew by 0.9 percent year on year.

TLDs that use the .com or .net domains experienced growth in the fourth quarter of 2017. Based on the data, the number of both reached about 146.4 million domain names registered in the domain name base.

This represents a growth of 2.9 percent year on year. As of December 31, 2017, registered domain name .com reached 131.9 million names, while registered .net-based domain names reached 14.5 million names.

Meanwhile, during the fourth quarter of 2017, there were 9 million total new .com and .net domain names registered.

By comparison, in the fourth quarter of 2016, there were 8.8 million total new domain names .com and .net listed.

Based on VeriSign data, in the fourth quarter of 2017, the top 10 TLDs according to zones are:

1. .com with the amount of 131, million

2.cn (China) as much as 21.4 million

3.tk (Tokelau) as much as 19.9 million

4.de (Germany) as much as 16.3 million

5. .net as much as 14.5 million

6. .uk (United Kingdom) 12.1 million

7.org as much as 10.3 million

8.info as much as 6.4 million

9. .ru (Russian Federation) of 6.2 million, and

10. .nl (Netherlands) as much as 5.8 million.


Most Domains By Country Code
 

Different again with the registration of the country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) which amounted to approximately 146.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2017.

There was an increase of 1.4 million domain name registrations, up 1.0 percent compared to the third quarter of 2017.

ccTLD increased by about 3.4 million domain name registrations or 2.4 percent year on year. As of December 31, 2017, here are ccTLDs based on zones:

1. .cn domain (China) 21.4 million

2. .tk domain (Tokelau) 19.9 million

3. domain .de (Germany) 16.3 million
